Powder Metal Forming Technology for Aluminum-Titanium Alloys

Background

Vehicle weight reduction has been an effective way to increase fuel efficiency. Plastics, aluminum and magnesium are some of the lightweight materials being used to replace steel and cast iron to reduce vehicular weight. However, due to the low melting point of these materials, they cannot be used in high temperature application such as exhaust manifolds, exhaust pipes and cylinder liners. Titanium (Ti) and Aluminum (Al) alloy is a high strength alloy and it is much lighter compare to iron/steel. This project used a patented Ti-Al composition formula with powder metal sintering technology to form a high temperature light weight alloy for automotive applications.
